The engine room for our planting is our poly tunnel, all are grown from seed and we use these prolifically throughout the town. Special thanks to Anita, Aine, Mary, Pieter & Jason for all the hard work here and early starts. Thank you to all our volunteers!!
- Reduced Food Miles: Polytunnels allow you to grow food locally, even out of season. This drastically reduces the distance food needs to travel from farm to table, cutting down on carbon emissions from transportation.
- Organic Growing Practices: The controlled environment of a polytunnel makes it easier to manage pests and diseases organically. This means less reliance on harmful pesticides and chemicals, protecting both soil health and wider ecosystems.
- Water Conservation: Polytunnels often use drip irrigation systems, which deliver water directly to plant roots. This minimizes evaporation and waste, leading to more efficient water use compared to traditional open-field farming.
- Reduced Food Waste: Polytunnels protect crops from harsh weather, pests, and diseases, leading to higher yields and less spoilage. This minimizes food waste at the production stage.
- Protection of Biodiversity: By reducing the reliance on conventional agriculture that can degrade habitats, polytunnels indirectly help protect biodiversity in the surrounding landscape.
