In a brilliant initiative called Can Do “Garden”, Blessington Tidy Towns is sprucing up the community by combining environmental awareness with floral beauty. Volunteers collect aluminium cans and plastic bottles as part of the deposit return scheme. By returning these recyclables for cash, they’re not only keeping litter off the streets but also generating funds. This unique approach allows them to transform everyday waste into vibrant pockets of colour by buying flowers to plant throughout the Blessington town. So, the next time you see a beautiful bloom in Blessington, remember – it could be a blossoming testament to the community’s dedication to both a cleaner environment and a more aesthetically pleasing town. In a fantastic community driven effort Circle K & Maxol in Blessington are donating the staffs Cans and Bottles they use during their shifts to our funding efforts too, thank you Theresa and Mark and Joe. Thank you Eileen for being our recycling Queen in driving this project!!
The Blessington Tidy Towns initiative has launched a creative and eco-friendly circular economy project by installing dedicated Return Bins for bottles and cans throughout the community. This “circular” approach allows residents to conveniently donate their empty containers, which the Tidy Towns volunteers then collect and process through the national deposit return scheme. Rather than letting these materials end up in general waste, the proceeds generated from the recycled containers are funneled directly back into the village’s aesthetic appeal; the funds are used to purchase vibrant flowers and greenery for local displays. It is a brilliant “green-for-green” strategy—turning literal litter into floral beauty—while fostering a stronger sense of environmental stewardship among Blessington’s neighbors.
Thanks to SuperValu, Hennessy’s Off Licence, Gather & Glow and Moody Rooster Cafe for taking the ReTurn bins so far , more to come.
