Fairy Doors

Blessington Tidy Towns have a nice project running, but we can’t tell you about it, for fear we will wake up the fairies.

Shhhhhhh fairies sleep here…….

More fairies are joining our community soon….But where are they?

A very very big thank you to Anna and her crew of young artists from Basecamp Art Studio for creating more fantastic Fairy Door art for our community. If you wish to try your hand at this or indeed a wide variety of art in a fun environment, feel free to reach out to Anna. She is facilitating art workshops, camps and classes for children aged 5 plus at the foot of the Wicklow mountains. Watch this space for more fantastic art to join our existing pieces, all created from recycled wood pallets…..

Welcome to the Fairies of Sorrell Wood too, a beautiful project also.
Deep in the heart of Sorrel Wood, where the lush greenery of Blessington meets the ancient foothills of the Wicklow Mountains, a quiet magic awaits those who look closely. Tucked away at the gnarled roots of native oaks and hidden among the moss-covered trunks along the Glending Greenway, you’ll find the enchanting Fairy Doors. These tiny, hand-carved portals—painted in vibrant hues of forest green, sky blue, and toadstool red—serve as the whimsical gateways for the “wee folk” who are said to guard the woodland. Each door is a miniature masterpiece, often adorned with microscopic windows, tiny stone steps, or a sprinkling of “fairy dust” that glitters when the sunlight filters through the canopy.

Walking this trail feels like stepping into a living storybook. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and pine, and there is a palpable sense of wonder as children and “big kids” alike hunt for the next secret dwelling. It isn’t uncommon to find small tokens left behind by previous travelers—a shiny pebble, a fallen acorn, or a handwritten wish tucked into a hollow—acknowledging the shy inhabitants of the wood. These doors do more than just decorate the path; they act as a bridge between the natural world and the boundless imagination, turning a simple woodland stroll into a treasure hunt through a realm where folklore and nature are one and the same.
