Tidiness & Litter Control

Blessington Tidy Towns are approaching 50 tons of litter collected, one piece at a time since 2012, our recycling efforts have also been in full swing too. Have a look at some of our many litter picking expeditions and work. Our team of volunteers meet every Sunday at 9am in the town square, beside the Downshire Monument. We do a litter pick around the town and surrounding area for about 1 hour. And the team of volunteers also meet on Wednesday evenings at 7pm from May to September. On the Sunday mornings, we visit local cafe Brew 21 for a coffee, tea or hot chocolate with marshmallows , for the kids, sponsored by Brew 21, Thank you!!! Why not join us some Sunday you are free, its a nice bit of exercise and the chat afterwards is great fun. Volunteers always welcome, we supply the litter pickers too. See you then?

We are constantly cleaning and trying to improve the appearance of Blessington. It involves regularly cleaning street furniture – signs, litter bins and much more around the town. Big thanks to all the team who do this dirty work. They really do leave no stone unturned in the battle for a sparkling town. Special shout out to Aine, Eileen and Noreen for the elbow grease.

Blessington Skate Park Revamp

Blessington Tidy Towns and Wicklow County Council, commissioned the Creative Connections team to design and repaint the Blessington skatepark. It was a really enjoyable project, and just shows that everything and anything really can be a canvas.

As part of the process, Blessington Tidy Towns and Creative Connections collaborated with local young people who use the park every week to help with the new look and design, reflecting the friendships of the park users and the culture of skateboarding and scootering. Big thanks to Dylan and Leo for their help and input. Thanks to Jason at Blessington Tidy Towns and Liam at Wicklow County Council for their support on the project as well, from sourcing the funding and making it happen.

Community Plawking Event

Again this year, Blessington Tidy Towns held it’s yearly Official Community Plawking event… and big shout out to Paul B. for getting it all arranged and for sorting everyone out with refreshments & sweet treats afterwards… 19 volunteers, 12+ kms covered and several bags of litter collected and Blessington looking its best… the event was organized as part of a wider clean up for 2022 & 2023 … and for those who are wondering… what is it? Well “Plawking” is simply picking litter while walking… and close relation of Plogging but that’s another days effort and another conversation…

Please check our social media for even more info on our exploits in this category..

In line with, and in the spirit of previous elections, Blessington Tidy Towns had contacted all Local & European candidates, and their parties, seeking their support in keeping sections of Blessington poster free in the elections (and maybe a referendum). The requested exclusion zones have been shared with all candidates and their parties, but it’s primarily the N81 from Texaco to Nuggents Tyres, and some of the side roads.

In both the 2014 and 2019 Local & European elections, as well as in referendums and general elections since 2012, we have enjoyed almost 100% cooperation from candidates. We hope for the same in 2024. We have assured candidates that we will publicly acknowledge and support the candidates who adhere to this request. Additionally, we will utilise a digital election board on our social media platforms to highlight these candidates, as we did in the last general election. This digital election board can be shared across other local community social media platforms to ensure that all candidates are known to the community.

Míle buíochas agus ádh mór ar na hiarrthóirí ar fad.

Thank you very very much to Sean Byrne , of Byrne Sweeping for an amazing job on all the road signs around Blessington. Another fantastic exhibition of brilliant community spirit. Sean also has been helping us on the roads with his fantastic road sweeping equipment. The town is better for your help.
