The Kildare and Wicklow Education and Training Board’s (KWETB) Free Library, as part of the wider Irish public library network, is an invaluable community asset, serving as a vital hub for lifelong learning and social connection. It offers free access to a vast collection of books, and digital resources, ensuring educational and recreational materials are available to everyone, regardless of socio-economic background. Beyond resources, the library acts as a crucial community meeting space, offering services like free internet access, support for job seekers, adult literacy programs, and cultural events, all of which contribute significantly to the social, cultural, and educational vitality of the local area.
The artwork from the KWETB Blessington students is often highlighted for its remarkable creativity and engagement with contemporary artistic practices, notably through programs like “Thinking Visual.” This initiative, often in collaboration with the Wicklow County Arts Office, sees students from Blessington Community College and Further Education and Training (FET) Centres work directly with established professional visual artists on experimental projects. Their work has involved diverse mediums, ranging from traditional painting and drawing to interactive digital media, video, and sound installations. For instance, students have created thought-provoking sound art for their school grounds and explored themes like media manipulation, local folklore, and ecology, demonstrating a high level of technical skill and a deep, conceptual engagement with their subjects. The resulting artworks are frequently showcased in local exhibitions, underscoring the exceptional artistic talent and innovation being fostered within the Blessington student community. Also included in the slide show is some great work regarding pollinator planting too.
